Lorex L104161C2W – 4 Channel Digital Wireless Surveillance System

This system is very easy to set up. I purchased for use at home and it is a good system for the price. The wireless reception has been perfect to the DVR in a 2700 sq. foot home. I have not connected it to my computer, but the software is included. I have it connected to a TV monitor which works for me. Was evaluating it to decide if I wanted it at the business, where I would connect to the computer instead. I cannot attest to the attributes of the computer software, however, and have decided I need cameras with better definition for use at the office. The cameras are good, but would not pick up enough detail (such as seeing the denomination of money from a distance) for use at the business.
One bad note that keeps it from getting five stars from me: The instructions are great for setting up the system and that part of it is pretty easy. They are not good at explaining the use of the remote control for viewing on the monitor. It really took some time to figure it out. Now, this might be easy if I was viewing recorded images using the software and computer, but I’m viewing on a monitor. Here’s a tip for you: Think of it this way. There are three viewing modes — 1) Live view. 2) Recorded view. 3) Program mode. It’s a little tricky figuring out how to use the remote to work in each mode. Just keep playing with it and you will eventually get it.
The motion detectors work very well. The night vision is acceptable since I have exterior lights to supplement. The picture is very clear in all modes. I would recommend this system for general use.

Problem… the Amazon description clearly states that the product software works with Windows Vista. This is NOT true. Even the included manual states that Vista is not supported. Worse, I have emailed Lorex technical support twice and have gotten NO response. There is evidence on the website of Vista upgrades for some products but this one isn’t listed.
Quality of the hardware is good for the money. The system seems to work so far (I’ve been doing close range testing only). You have to use a TV or a monitor to view the image data if you have a computer running Vista. So, you can’t backup data to your PC, etc., plus you have to go buy your own BNC cable to connect the HDD unit to your TV (unless you can use one of the short extensions that are included; they are intended for relocating the wireless receiver if necessary).
If the technical support continues to be nonexistent then obviously, it’s not even worth one Star.
I am reluctant to return the item since it might work fine with my XP-based netbook; I intend to try the netbook and will update the review. I might also be able to live with monitoring via the TV.
